When you have the lantern, just place it into the Pouch. It will be positioned on your waist until you remove it. If you are in the dark zone, open up the pause menu, and switch the lantern on. It won’t use any resources; therefore, you can continue using it if you wish to. Just be aware that it’ll shut off when you pass away and needs to be switched back on.
