USDA Rural Business Development Grants
All non-urban entities can apply for the Rural Business Development Grants offered by the United States Department of Agriculture. These grants are available for towns, small businesses, and non-profit organizations. These grants can be used to purchase real estate, equipment or develop business plans.
This is true for all companies, and not just minority-owned businesses. However, there are three essential qualifications.
- Employers can’t be more than 50
- Your annual net income cannot exceed $1,000,000
- You have to live in either a rural or urban area
Rural is defined by the USDA as an area with less than 50,000 inhabitants. It doesn’t have to be located in an area with more than 50,000 residents. Make sure you check with the USDA Rural Development office in your state before applying.

Grants for Native American Business Development Institutes
The Office of Indian Economic Development funds feasibility studies to assist tribal leaders in identifying economic opportunities and providing documentation for investors and lenders. Small businesses can apply for NASE Growth Grants. These grants are worth $4,000 and can be used to expand your business, such as by training new employees or expanding your marketing. NASE members need to be active. A $120 annual or ongoing membership is required.
FedEx Small Business Grant Competition
The FedEx Small Business Grant Contest application window has now closed. The FedEx Small Business Grant Contest application window for 2019 has closed. This program offers financial assistance to small Black-owned businesses in order to help them recover from the pandemic. This program offers mentorship and long-term support.
