Betting on the NFL for beginners

The NFL is back, and with last season’s Super Bowl being watched in the US by the biggest TV audience for five years, the popularity of the sport continues to grow and grow. As excitement builds for a season that looks too close to call, fans are looking forward to having a wager on their favourite teams.

The American Gaming Association claimed that U.S. bettors wagered an estimated $8 billion on Super Bowl LVI, nearly double the previous record of $4.3 billion from Super Bowl LV. In the US, football is the most popular sport for wagers, making up nearly half of all sports bets placed in the US.

Who will win the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LVII looks like being closer than ever with plenty of teams in with a chance of making a run to the final. The Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes will be looking to improve on last season, while Tom Brady, back for one more go, will be hoping to sign off with Ring number eight.

Can Head Coach Sean McVay and the Rams, repeat last years victory and become only the eight team to accomplish back to back Super Bowls, and the first team to do it since the New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX).

How to bet on the NFL

The main betting markets for NFL are match results, handicaps, total match points and multiple team accumulators. Individual player betting – especially who will score a touchdown – is also a popular option for many.

With so many exciting options to choose from, we’re going to focus on some of the most common football bets around. So, if you are new to betting or NFL betting in particular, just follow our simple guide below.

Outright Betting

This involves betting on who will be the outright winner of the Super Bowl or even MVP of the league. Simple to understand, just pick your winner and place your bet.

The odds on this type of bet can be extremely favourable, especially if you make your bet early and your team comes good. Shocks always happen during the season and odds will drop as the season progresses.

Match Betting or Moneyline

This is the easiest football bet to understand. All you have to do is pick the team that will win the game, with the odds dictating your potential payout.

If the Bills are (-200) then you need to stake $100 in order to win $200.

If the Bills are (+200) that means a $100 stake wins you $200.

Moneyline bets offer lower odds than any other kind of wager, but they are simple to do and great for beginners.

Multiple Match Betting or Parlays

A way of increasing single game match odds is with a parlay, which involves betting on the result of more than one match or event. That could be the result of several games or picking a winner of a game, plus the total number of points, number of touchdowns, scorers, etc.

With plenty of games to choose from on Sundays, it’s a fun way to get involved in all the action and increase your potential winnings for a lower outlay. But don’t forget, you need to get every result or event correct or you lose your stake. There’s no prize for calling 9 out of 10.

Betting Totals (Over/Under)

Betting on the ‘Total’ means your focus is on how many points will be scored in the game in ‘Total’ – Not who will win it. Sometimes referred to as over-under betting it offers slightly better odds than moneyline.

Cincinnati Bengals/L.A. Rams – 45.5

Using the above example, you simply have to decide if the total number of points scored in the game will be OVER or UNDER 45.5. These bets allow you to enjoy the game no matter the result, and can keep the excitement going right until the very end.

Player Betting

There are multiple player markets available, but the most popular are touchdown scorer or a touchdown accumulator. Quarterbacks also offer a variety of options, with markets for how many touchdowns they throw, passing yards, sacks and more. Number of catches received and yards carried, are also popular for receivers and running backs.

Betting is a great way to add some excitement to all the action, even if your team isn’t playing, but whatever wager you decide on, remember to start simple, set a budget and do your research.
